Preamble
Usually, at the beginning of the year most Churches organize workers retreat for the workers. The intention is to equip them for the task of administering and leading the different ministries of the Church they have been assigned. It is not out of place to say everybody in the Church is a worker since every Christian should ideally be engaged in one service or the other. However, in this retreat, we are talking of Church workers who have been selected by the Church into different units, teams or organizations or ministries in a given Church. In this year’s retreat, we shall lay emphasis on two important words which as Church workers we need not forget. These words are “proactive” and “ productive”
Proactive: The English Dictionary considers this word as “ Creating or controlling a situation rather than just responding to it after it has happened”. We are thus talking about a worker having the ability to think ahead to address of find solution to a given situation. It means you sometimes think or create the problem in your mind and find solution to it before it occurs. In such situation, you are not thrown into a confused state when it does happen.
Proactive ministry is an ability to see into the future, plan ahead with intention, and organize to deal with future developments.
Productive: Again, the Dictionary says it is “achieving a significant amount of result”. We are here referring to services you render that must be impactful, shows positive result and help to improve the Church ministries.
We can understand the importance of these two words in Church worker with the use of an analogy of a Thermometer and a Thermostat. A Thermometer simply reflects the temperature of its surroundings. A thermostat, on the other hand, can change the temperature as needed. A proactive and productive Church worker is expected to be like a Thermostat and not a Thermometer. .
Church Workers and Some of their Characteristics:
There are two types of Church workers, the paid and voluntary workers. Our focus is on voluntary workers who work in various ministries of the Church without payment. A church worker is one who is selected out of the other members by the leading of the Holy Spirit for service with the use of the grace gifts, talents and skills. These workers should be those who desire to serve, with clearly defined goals, as needed servants.
The Bible presents a lot of people who served to assist at various levels. Adan needed a helper and He gave him Eve Gen. 2:1-23). Moses was given to Aaron when he needed a helper to face Pharaoh (Exodus 3: 1-4, 17), and when Moses complained of the workload being too burdensome to bear (Numbers 11:14,17). It is obvious that workers are needed in the Church because the Church as a body 1 Cor. 12:12, 14, 20, 27) has many parts and all members do contribute to the health of the body. These parts are all designed differently but to work as a team to make the work easy.
There are many characteristics of a Church worker but we shall consider few of them;
- The person must be born again and have the interest to serve God and humanity through the Church, be full of the Spirit and wisdom.. “Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business” (Acts 6:3, John 3:16ff).
- Such person must understand the vision and mission of the Church clearly and thus seek to actualize them. (Luke 10:2 New King James Version).
- Such person must be a servant who is ready to submit to leadership and authority. Such must be teachable, humble, in serving through the Church.
- Such seek to work with others as a team. New ideas are shared with others and does not seek to take the glory.
- Such must live a life of Purity. God is a holy God. “You must be holy because I, the LORD, am holy. I have set you apart from all other people to be my very own” (Leviticus 20:26 New Living Translation). Those who will serve in His house must live a holy life if they are going to be effective. God can use anybody, but he must live a life of purity once he comes to Him. (2 Timothy 2:20-21)
- Relational skills. The ability to work with people is vital in any human endeavour. Nobody is an island to himself, so an effective worker must cultivate the ability to get along with people. Competence is not enough; team spirit is essential. An excellent worker who lacks human relations and does not work peaceably with the rest is not an asset because a tree does not make a forest – no single worker can do it all. “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4)
- Must have Good Character and Reputation. D. L Moody is quoted as saying, “If I take care of my character, my reputation will take care of itself.” Nobody is an angel – no one can boast of sinless perfection – but someone with a bad reputation is a liability to the work of the Kingdom. Here, the emphasis is not on the past life of the prospective worker, because he that is in Christ is a new creature, old things have passed away; all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). What is important is his new life in Christ. Does he have good character? What do others say about him?
- Such must not be flippant nor talk carelessly. Must THINK before speaking. Allow your thought to go through this ethical test.
- T = Is it True?
- H = Is it Helpful?
- I = Is it Inspiring?
- N = Is it Necessary?
- K = Is it Kind?
The Need to Raise Proactive and Productive Church Workers
- You have been selected to make an Impact in your Area of Service.
We are using the appellation of Church Workers but such should not forget that they are spiritual leaders. A Christian leader is someone who is called by God to lead with and through Christ like character, and demonstrates the functional competences that permit effective leadership to take place”. “He is one who is passionate about God’s work and willing to lead others in fulfilling his kingdom here on earth”. The direction is towards God and people. Since he is dealing with human beings who are very sensitive, there is need to be proactive. Many leaders are rather Reactive than Proactive. Reactive workers just ride the wave that other people have created for them. They simply need to focus on the highest priority problem, or complete work others have put on their table. Proactive leaders take time to plan, improve how the team works and put in place measures to prevent problems before they happen. They identify the areas of risk and work on measures that will reduce the impact of possible problems or stop the problems happening. It may require you creating the possible problem in your mind and find solution to it before it does happen. It is only in this way you can add value to the work and for it to grow and be productive. O achieve this you need to Understand and Improve on the demands or processes of your task.. Also, there is need to build a net work if you are working with a team and keep in touch with them.
- You need to be Proactive because the Kingdom work is not Immune from Problems.
Usually irrespective of the nature of responsibility, problems may be of three areas; those that are directly under your control, those that are indirectly under our control, and those over which we have no control. Doing the work of God with others can be sometimes difficult because human beings themselves are difficult. But being proactive will require you to discover in which of the areas a problem falls and then putting the steps in place to solve the problem or change our way of viewing the problem. One simple example is a Sunday School Superintendent liaising with the Pastor to get the necessary material for the year the previous year. The theme does not struggle at the turn of the year. This will improve the work.
- God Rewards Every Service we Render to Him:
Hebrew 11:6. God rewards all that are in His service faithfully. His reward is not only in monetary terms. What can you be remembered of after your one, two or period of service in the Church. Is it that you killed the department or you made an impact?
Closing
The workers in the church are not enough yet not all who are working are effective, not because they cannot be, but because they may not be paying the price to be effective or they are serving where they do not fit in well. As I conclude remember God is looking for FAT people.
F = Faithful: Faithfulness. To be faithful means to be dependable, loyal, trustworthy and stable. Faithfulness is an essential quality for anyone to be an effective worker or leader in the Kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 4:2 says, “Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful” (New King James Version).
A = Available : To be effective, a worker must be available to serve. “Then I heard the Lord asking, ‘Whom should I send as a messenger to my people? Who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Lord, I’ll go! Send me’” (Isaiah 6:8 New Living Translation). Service cannot be done without investing time – workers need time to pray and do the business of. Anyone who intends to serve must be ready to create time for it.
T = Trust: God need those He can trust with the Kingdom business.
Also, proactive and productive Church workers
They seek advice and help when required
No one can know everything. Effective leaders don’t arrogantly try to force their way into other areas they don’t understand. Instead, they seek advice and help from colleagues and others to increase their knowledge and get their work done.
They know how to utilize team strengths
Proactive leaders know the strengths and weaknesses of their team members, so they can quickly delegate tasks to the right person. This is not to say that others should never try anything new, however, when a quick turnaround time is needed, proactive leaders should already know the right person who can be trusted to get the job done quickly and correctly.
They take criticism well
Proactive leaders are always willing to learn from mistakes. A crucial part of this practice is the ability to take constructive criticism. Feedback, both positive and negative, is an extremely important tool in improving future processes. Leaders should be thick-skinned, but able to learn from criticism of their work and leadership tactics.

When they ushers the worshippers to their seats, they do it for God. When they gather the offerings, they serve God. What they do, they do not as unto men, but unto God”. They are a part of the total congregation which presents itself before God to worship Him.
Cautions: Things to remember seriously
